This memoir is really fascinating and insightful, and I appreciated it's playful tone.
The author does a great job portraying how she saw the world as a child growing up in an orphanage for Chinese girls.
My grandmother also grew up in the Ming Quong home, one of the homes in Oakland, and after reading this I feel like I am closer to understanding her experience there.
Yikes.
This is a really badly written/edited book written with great passion about an incredible period of time.
If this is a topic that interests you, please ignore the quality of the writingyou wil not be disappointed.
The author goes to live at Ming Quong orphanage in1935.
It is still there up the block from the History Club of Los Gatos at the old Spreckles mansion.
The original gate remains.
This was an awful period of time for Chinese children, and Ming Quong was one of three Chinese orphanages in the Bay Area.
I loved this book! It gave an idea of what life was like growing up as a Chinese orphan.
Thank goodness for a place like this to rescue children, both boys and girls! It felt like I was actually living with Nona! Such a eye opening story.

Ù Chopstick Childhood Ù My grandmother grew up in the Ming Quong Home for Chinese girls, and so I wanted to read this memoir, because in a lot of ways I feel as though it's about her life.
(And I opened the book and discovered her picture in it, at a Ming Quong Reunion.
) This book is a compelling and fascinating story of one girl's experience growing up in the homean important facet of Chinese American history.
I would recommend this to anyone interested in learning more about early Chinese Americans, the Ming Quong Home, or race relations in the South Bay in the 1930s and 40s.
